Shed freak and organ hats
Mar. 24th, 2026 12:27 amLJ icons came up recently in conversation in another fannish space, which had me digging up the Tumblr post I made a few years ago about the shed freak icons, and I thought I'd preserve it here for posterity as well.
A million years ago on the internet (or maybe circa 2003-2005) icons for your Livejournal account were a THING. You could have multiple icons for your account (how many varied, and at one point became a paid thing). There were whole conversations had by icon in the comments. In-jokes thrived and flourished. You could pack a whole lot in a 100x100 pixel square.
A million years ago off the internet, my lovely wife and our good friend
zulu were critiquing stories for their writers’ group. And there was a story by a newbie writer with a whole lotta attitude that was just… bad. The kind of badness that verges on incomprehensible.
“What does this even mean, ‘don’t tell so-and-so, shed freak?’“ Barb said plaintively. “What’s a shed freak?”
It was, of course, just a case of a missing apostrophe. She’d freak, not shed freak. But by then, it was too late. Shed freak had become a Thing.
All this goes to explain why I have just found an entire folder of shed freak icons buried in the depths of my hard drive, in a microcosm of fandoms we were part of at the moment.
( beware! shed freaks within! )

There’s a whole other series about the organ hat party, but that’s a story for another time.
*
And now, the organ hat story, as relayed on the fanbinding server a few nights ago.
It has the same genesis as Zulu's "Five Times The Big Game Hunters Were Really Gay" Boa vs Python fic, aka, something shouted and misheard from the kitchen to the living room in our small but inconveniently laid out apartment at the time. Only this time, it wasn't movie characters, and Big Gay Hunters for Big Game Hunters. No, it was more mundane, at least to start.
It was December, and we'd been invited to a holiday party by one of my (not yet) wife's coworkers. "What are you wearing to Barb and Pat's party?" I called out into the living room.
"... to what?"
"Tomorrow night? The Christmas party?"
"I thought you said ORGAN HAT party!"
Ridiculousness ensued, and Zulu and Barb riffed off each other until Barb was laughing so hard she couldn't breathe, and gasped out "I hurt my pancreas! Now what will I wear to the organ hat party?"
So we immortalized it in LJ icons. Which I wonder if I can find...
GUESS WHAT.
I found a folder. Labelled shed freaks and organ hats.
And that is the tale of the organ hats.

mom, sympathetically: you could set up one for adults :D
(note she is the furthest thing from a gamer. but views it as more 'ok if it makes you happy and keeps you out of trouble...')
literally, though. i gotta recreate my college smash melee tournament nights!!!!!
it would be kind of slightly funny to crash the teenage event for a night. :p rolling up with a literal working gamecube plus 4 controllers a la 'how do you do fellow kids'.

Mar. 18th, 2026 11:13 pmi'm not going to pit two bad bitches against each other even when i have a personal favorite of the two, but it's curious and a bit endearing to see emet's longevity and particular devotion he inspires especially in an era where i feel like fandoms cycle in and cycle out in a blink of an eye.
(caveat i'm unlikely to play future FF's especially that one because of MMO mechanics, but i do enjoy the pretty boy to elder queen fanart pipeline as one does.)

Mar. 14th, 2026 01:47 pmespecially tricky to guess at because - attempting to look at myself from how i act online - the one "constant" is refusing to be put in a box, ha.
specifically in art circles there's been a growing physical separation in terms of the more mainstream & palatable versus the seedier, sharper, "guilty pleasure" (crack, selfship, 4chan shitpost humor, whatever) and outright kinky works; maybe i was young enough on dA i didn't see it then but from what i remember it was all mashed up in the same place there. regardless if it's original works or fanwork circles, doesn't matter, it's a pretty sharp divide now, and i do get the vague sense of having one foot in both (mainstream reputation probably borrowed from my iron crown days, and generally more tame fanwork posts).
reputation here being in types of artwork, actions, and general "vibe". i def flip flop inconsistently between said mainstream work and the occasional wiggy as hell "bomb"; part of it truly just depends on whatever i'm in the mood to finish that day, part of it is slightly intentional "rent lowering firing a gun" so i don't get too known for one Thing and be put back in a box.
i don't go actively looking for what people say; it's really none of my business (and they have the right to say whatever). what i do sometimes see is the kind of activity on posts that suggests they're being passed around on discord servers (totally cool). i know some folks dislike me (i'm sure i've earned some of it...), but also probably because being annoyingly loud for defending lolisho for so long even when it was more of a third rail controversial topic (and something i don't usually draw). def know i read as intimidating/reserved at neutral, lol, my ex mentioned it a few times.
it's funny to be a known entity, especially how i never intended this handle to be anything but an anonymous escape.

Mar. 13th, 2026 09:36 pm'i don't even like any of you but come on, have the notion of not breaking anybody else's toy. fix things so that somebody else who enjoys their life more can actually enjoy it.' kind of thing.
(this is unnecessarily grumpy imo but it does keep running through my brain so tossing it out there to hopefully be done with it.)
Bad Bunny

And if you are interested, someone one Bluesky shared their Bad Bunny 101 write-up, which has links to a bunch of other articles and listening suggestions. Reggaeton is probably not gonna be one of my top genres personally, but I feel like it's good to get out of my listening confort zone and try new things, particularly when it's like, a global phenomenon right now.

Lately...
Mar. 12th, 2026 09:08 pmI also gave a presentation for my local astronomy org! I was super nervous, because I've historically been pretty bad with public speaking, but I think it went okay. I was probably talking too fast, but it is what it is -- I think it ended up being about twenty minutes long (20-30 minutes was the guide). I only presented in front of about twenty people, so it wasn't too daunting. Most of them seemed pretty happy with it! I didn't really get any of the questions I thought I'd get at the end, but someone did take a picture of my 'where to find out more' slide, which means I did enough to get him interested!
I did overhear one guy saying "thankfully there weren't any questions" as he left, and I don't really get what he meant, but I'm choosing not to dwell on it. (Which is much easier now I'm medicated for anxiety...)
Fandom-wise, I posted chapter two of falling asleep with the lights on (my Heated Rivalry sickfic). Got a couple of nice comments, which is always lovely. I really need to get better at replying to comments...
Speaking of, someone on tumblr rec'd my first Heated Rivalry fic bad decisions! I got fifteen comments literally overnight, it was very exciting (and a little confusing, before I found the post!) I have a theory that people are more likely to comment on a fic that they've been rec'd, rather than one that they've just stumbled across, does that match anyone else's experience?
Either way I'm really liking the Heated Rivalry fandom so far. It's nice writing for a big fandom again! I've never been the best at making fandom friends, but everyone's been super nice so far. I also made a Heated Rivalry sideblog, if anyone wants to follow me there!
