There are a lot of people in fandom now, since it's full on mainstream at this point, who aren't actually interested in the punk at all. They want to be comfortable. They aren't looking to be challenged by work or to create raw stuff themselves.
You're right, there's a spectrum of fan creation there. Shiny works for conventions, that's a thing, isn't it? I'd never thought of it before. Not something I'm all that into, if I'm being perfectly honest! I want that raw shit, that shit that already got banned off a platform or two, the shit that gets the pearl-clutching, death-threat-hurling, pitchfork mobs riled up. That's the stuff that I collect and enjoy because it made people feel something, pushed some buttons. The creations made by people who had something to say.
